How to trim palms (and why to skip the "hurricane cut")
The University of Florida's IFAS Extension says to remove only completely brown fronds from palms. Green fronds feed the palm, and cutting them creates wounds that invite disease. Yellowing fronds can be a sign of a nutrient deficiency, so leave them and fertilize instead.
- Use the clock rule as a hard limit. Picture the canopy as a clock face and never cut above the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions. A full, round canopy is the goal.
- Skip the "hurricane cut." Stripping a palm down to a few fronds at the top doesn't protect it. UF/IFAS notes hurricane-cut palms were more likely to have their crowns snap off in past Florida storms.
- Some palms don't need trimming at all. Royal, foxtail and Christmas palms drop their own fronds.
- Seed pods and flower stalks can be removed without harming the palm, which cuts down on mess around pools and patios.
Getting trees ready for hurricane season
- Trim before June 1. Spring is the time for storm pruning. Once a storm is forecast, tree crews are booked and piles of cut branches at the curb can become flying debris.
- Ask for structural pruning, not topping. Good pruning thins the canopy and removes dead, weak or crossing limbs so wind can pass through. Topping (cutting the whole top off) leaves weak regrowth that breaks more easily.
- Get problem trees assessed. Trees with large dead limbs, cracks, hollow trunks, mushrooms at the base or a new lean toward the house are worth having an arborist look at.
- Keep a storm number saved. After a hurricane, companies with 24/7 storm response get booked fast.
Trees near power lines: call FPL or a line-clearance pro
FPL says not to do any work near power lines yourself. Keep yourself and anything you're holding at least 10 feet from neighborhood lines and 30 feet from high-voltage transmission lines, and hire a qualified line-clearance professional for trees near lines. FPL says it clears neighborhood lines about every six years on average. Also keep a clear zone of 8 feet in front of and 3 feet around the sides and back of green pad-mounted transformers in your yard. When planting, check a tree's mature height and spread before putting it anywhere near lines.
Do you need a permit to remove a tree in Wellington?
Rules depend on your property, the type of tree and your community. Before removing a tree, check with the Village of Wellington (Village Hall: (561) 791-4000) and with your HOA, since many Wellington communities require architectural approval to remove or replace trees.
Dangerous trees: Under Florida Statute 163.045, if you own a single-family home and get documentation from an ISA certified arborist or a Florida licensed landscape architect that a tree poses an unacceptable risk to people or property, your local government can't require a permit, application, fee or replacement tree to prune, trim or remove it. The assessment has to follow the ISA's tree risk assessment standards and be signed by the arborist or landscape architect. Keep a copy of that documentation.
Wellington's rules for tree debris at the curb
Wellington collects vegetation once a week. Its solid waste guidelines say:
- Small yard waste, like leaves, hedge trimmings, small fronds and weeds, must go in a container, and your green vegetation cart should be filled first.
- No single piece can be longer than 6 feet or heavier than 50 lbs, and limbs over 10 inches in diameter aren't collected.
- Don't pile vegetation under a utility pole or power line, on a vacant lot or along a main road, and keep it at least 3 feet from garbage.
- Debris from a tree company isn't collected. Vegetation from a commercial company, and tree removals, stumps, root balls and trunks, are your responsibility to haul away. That's why your tree service quote should include debris removal.
- Piles that don't follow the rules get tagged. You can fix them for the next pickup or pay your hauler to take them.
How to hire a tree service
- Look for an ISA Certified Arborist on the crew or doing the estimate. You can search for one at treesaregood.org.
- Ask for proof of insurance, including general liability and workers' compensation. If an uninsured worker gets hurt on your property, you could be on the hook.
- Get the scope in writing: which trees, how much will be cut, whether palms get only brown fronds removed, and whether stump grinding and debris haul-away are included.
- Be wary of storm chasers. After hurricanes, out-of-town crews knock on doors asking for cash up front. Stick with established local companies.
- Avoid anyone who recommends topping healthy trees or hurricane-cutting palms.
