What is the Winter Equestrian Festival?

WEF is one of the largest and longest-running horse shows in the world. Each winter, riders, trainers, grooms and owners relocate to Wellington with thousands of horses for weeks of competition at every level, from young riders in the equitation ring to Olympians in international grand prix classes. The showgrounds are operated by Global Equestrian Group, and the season draws riders from every state and around 52 countries.

When to go

Competition runs most days of the week through the season. Weekdays are the easiest time to wander the grounds, watch a few classes and get a feel for the sport without the crowds. Weekend grand prix events, especially evening classes, are the most social and the busiest, so plan to arrive early.

Tips for first-time spectators

  • Start with the main arena. The biggest classes of the week are held in the International Arena, and the atmosphere on a big night is worth experiencing at least once.
  • Watch a hunter class too. Hunters are judged on style and smoothness rather than speed, and it is a different, quieter side of the sport.
  • Dress for the weather. Winter days are usually sunny and warm, and evenings can cool off quickly.
  • Leave the dog at home. Horse shows are busy working environments, and the grounds are full of horses being ridden and led.
  • Check the official schedule. Class times and featured events change week to week, so look at the official WEF schedule before you go.

Planning around WEF traffic

If you live in Wellington, the season means heavier traffic on South Shore Blvd, Pierson Road and 120th Avenue South, especially on weekend evenings and during the busiest weeks. Give yourself extra time around the showgrounds, and expect restaurants near the equestrian district to fill up on big competition nights.

Where to eat during the season

The restaurants along South Shore Blvd and Polo Club Rd are popular with the horse show crowd, including The Players Club, Maxwell's Plum and Stallion. For more ideas, browse our full Wellington restaurant guide.

More of the winter season

WEF overlaps with the rest of Wellington's equestrian calendar. Polo runs at the National Polo Center from December 27 through May 2 (see our polo season guide), and dressage takes over Equestrian Village with the Adequan Global Dressage Festival, typically January through March.
