About the Wellington branch
The Wellington branch opened in 1997 and was expanded in 2007 from about 8,000 square feet to about 30,000 square feet, and it has ranked among the busiest branches in the county system for checkouts, according to the Town-Crier. The library system describes it as lending a large number of popular adult fiction, nonfiction and children's materials, with an active children's section that offers activities for kids of all ages.
Inside, you'll find a children's area, a teen section, study rooms, an 80-seat meeting room and a 10-seat conference room, plus self-service checkout and interior and exterior book drops. There's also a family restroom and charging outlets.
How to get a free library card
Wellington is one of the municipalities served by the Palm Beach County Library System, so Wellington residents get a library card free. So do residents of nearby Royal Palm Beach, Greenacres, Loxahatchee Groves and unincorporated areas of the county. Children who live anywhere in Palm Beach County or attend a Palm Beach County school can also get a free card.
You can apply three ways:
- Online through the library system's online registration, linked from pbclibrary.org/librarycard.
- In person at the Wellington branch or any county branch.
- By video chat: members with a webcam or phone can schedule a FaceTime or Google Meet appointment with any branch and get a digital card number.
What to bring: a photo ID and proof of your current address. The library accepts items such as a Florida driver's license, a Florida voter registration card, a lease, rental receipt or deed, postmarked mail (with ID), a vehicle registration or insurance card, printed checks, or a Palm Beach County tax bill that includes the library tax.
What your card gets you
- Books, DVDs and more from every county branch
- E-books, audiobooks and streaming through services such as hoopla, cloudLibrary and Freegal
- Online courses through Udemy and language lessons through Transparent Language
- Newspapers, magazines and research databases, including historical newspapers going back more than 100 years
- Borrowable extras such as STEM kits, birding backpacks and Wi-Fi hot spots
- Access to the Bookmobile and the library's book vending machines
No late fines: The Palm Beach County Library System stopped charging overdue fines on Oct. 1, 2019, WLRN reported. You still need to return items, and lost items can still cost you.
Programs for kids, teens and adults
The branch runs free programs most days of the week. Here's a sample from the library's calendar for early November 2026:
- Littles Love Lit, a story program for young kids (Saturday, Nov. 7, 2 p.m.)
- Sensory Friendly Playtime and a Sensory Friendly Browsing Hour (Sunday, Nov. 8, 11 a.m.)
- Sunday Chess Club (Sunday, Nov. 8, 3 p.m.)
- Dungeons & Dragons (Monday, Nov. 9, 6 p.m.)
- Tech Talk: Android Basics, a hands-on class for adults (Tuesday, Nov. 10, 10 a.m.)
Programs change every month, so check the branch's events list on pbclibrary.org. The library also offers hands-on computer training for beginners and more experienced users. For more family ideas, see our guide to things to do with kids in Wellington.
Meeting rooms and study rooms
- Meeting rooms: Library members can reserve a meeting room for government organizations, nonprofits and other non-commercial groups. Review the library's meeting room policy, then check availability and book at pbclibrary.libcal.com. Bookings are reviewed and approved, so call the branch for same-day requests. Groups set up and take down their own tables and chairs, so build that time into your reservation.
- Study rooms: Study rooms are first come, first served for two hours, and the time extends if nobody is waiting. Ask at the research desk. They can't be reserved ahead of time, except by the library's literacy volunteers and their students.
Services most people don't know about
- Free Wi-Fi and computers for everyone, plus lending laptops that cardholders can use inside the building.
- Printing, scanning and faxing at the branch.
- Charging outlets if you need to work for a few hours.
- Small merchandise: flash drives, tote bags and earbuds are $2 each.
- Voting: The Wellington branch has served as an early voting site in Palm Beach County elections, including the Nov. 3, 2026 general election. See our early voting guide.
What the 2026 library bond means
On Nov. 3, voters in the Palm Beach County Library District approved a measure letting the county borrow up to $175 million for library expansion and modernization, according to unofficial results. The money is part of a larger expansion program that includes a new Main Library and renovations to existing branches over about 15 years. The library system hasn't announced a specific project or timeline for the Wellington branch. See our ballot question recap for details.
