If you've ever tried to drive straight north on Lyons Road past Lake Worth Road, you know the feeling: the road just stops. A sign has hinted at an extension for years, local TV has called it a 30-year promise, and drivers still detour onto State Road 7 to reach Forest Hill Boulevard. So why hasn't it been built, and should it be? Here's what's holding it up and what each side says.
Lyons Road at a glance
- The gap
- Lyons Road ends at Lake Worth Road instead of continuing north toward Forest Hill Boulevard and Stribling Way
- The detour
- Lake Worth Road to State Road 7 (US 441) to Stribling Way to Forest Hill Boulevard
- What triggers construction
- Palm Beach County builds it when US 441 between Lake Worth Road and Stribling Way reaches capacity
- The numbers
- Capacity is about 3,590 vehicles in the busiest hour; the road carries just under 2,860, per WFLX
- The catch
- An extension would run through the Ranchettes, a rural area of horse properties
The missing link
Lyons Road is one of western Palm Beach County's main north-south routes, but in Wellington it has a gap. According to WFLX, this stretch is the only spot between Okeechobee Boulevard and Glades Road where drivers can't continue straight through on Lyons. Instead, drivers heading north from Lake Worth Road have to jog over to State Road 7, take Stribling Way and then reach Forest Hill Boulevard.
Why it hasn't been built
It comes down to a traffic formula. WFLX reported that Palm Beach County builds the extension only when traffic justifies it, and the trigger is State Road 7 (US 441) between Lake Worth Road and Stribling Way reaching capacity. That stretch is an eight-lane divided road, and the county considers it full above about 3,590 vehicles in the busiest hour. The latest count was just under 2,860, roughly 80% of the way there.
In other words, as frustrating as the detour feels at rush hour, the numbers say State Road 7 still has room, so the county hasn't pulled the trigger.
Should Lyons Road go through?
The case for extending it
- A straight shot. Drivers who want it point out it would create a continuous route from Okeechobee Boulevard to Glades Road. "This is the only spot where you cannot go straight through," one resident told WFLX.
- Relief for State Road 7. Every car that uses Lyons is one less car at the busy Forest Hill Boulevard and State Road 7 intersection.
- More growth is coming. Lotis Wellington, Seasons 52, Village Landing and Wingrove Academy are all adding trips along State Road 7. Supporters argue it's better to plan the road before the corridor fills up, not after.
The case against
- It would cut through the Ranchettes. The extension would run through an area of horse properties that residents value for its rural feel. One resident told WFLX she'd likely oppose it, describing a road where families walk horses and there's "lots of wildlife, livestock."
- The numbers don't call for it yet. By the county's own standard, State Road 7 is at about 80% of capacity, so building now would spend money ahead of the need.
- New roads can bring new traffic. Some residents worry a through-road would turn a quiet rural area into a cut-through for drivers avoiding State Road 7.
What's being done in the meantime
Instead of a new road, the near-term fixes are focused on State Road 7 itself. The approvals for Village Landing came with required road work, including added turn capacity at Forest Hill Boulevard and State Road 7, extra lanes around the Stribling Way roundabout and turn lanes near Stribling Way and State Road 7. Whether those improvements keep State Road 7 under the county's trigger, or whether new development pushes it over, will decide whether Lyons Road ever goes through.
